Truck protest threatens to disrupt R33 route

Truck protest threatens to disrupt R33 route.

The R33 route between Dundee and Vryheid is among the roads expected to be affected by planned province-wide protest action by the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ADTF-ASA) tomorrow.

Trucking forum raises labour concerns

The organisation said the planned shutdown aims to highlight long-standing grievances within the trucking industry, including concerns over the employment of foreign nationals.

ADTF-ASA secretary-general Gugu Sokhela said the protest would also focus on opposition to the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences demerit system, which is expected to be implemented in the coming months.

Disruptions are also expected on major routes including the N11, N3 and N2 in KwaZulu-Natal.

Motorists and freight operators have been urged to remain alert and plan alternative travel arrangements where possible.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport confirmed on Thursday that it was engaging with national government regarding the planned action.

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said officials were concerned about road accidents involving undocumented foreign truck drivers, as well as labour-related issues within the transport sector.

Authorities are expected to monitor affected routes closely should the protest proceed.
