You can save three lives
One donation four times a year can mean the world to 12 people.

With just one blood donation, you have the potential to save three lives.
The holiday season is a time devoted to rounding off the year in the presence of family and friends, taking a deserved vacation or simply enjoying the freedom to go shopping.
Sadly, not every person can enjoy such luxuries.
Vanessa Raju of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), said thousands of residents remain reliant on blood transfusions, including those giving birth or involved in collisions.
“The SANBS needs to collect 3000 units of blood every day, and without it many people could lose their loved ones.”
Statistics reveal less than one per cent of South Africans donate blood annually, equating to a very real threat of hospitals suffering blood shortages over holiday periods.
The SANBS has thus launched the campaign, Don’t Let Holidays Get In The Way Of Life.
“This simply means while December is a great time to unwind and reflect on the year that has been, it is also a time to give one of the greatest gifts, the juice which keeps every heart beating, regardless of race, creed, gender or age.”
Every person who is able, is urged to donate blood this festive season.
“All it takes is 30 minutes of your time to donate blood and it won’t cost you a cent. Give the best gift… Give the gift of life.”
In line with this campaign, the Newcastle Donor Centre is hosting a special Big Bleed on December 10 from 10am to 6pm, and invites Newcastillians to give the gift of life.
“Be a hero, it’s in your blood,” proclaimed SANBS spokeswoman, Shavani Sewpaul.
The SANBS also extended thanks to residents who donated during the winter months of the year, all of who helped improve national blood stock levels significantly.
While blood levels are stable, the need for blood is always prevalent.
To donate blood, potential donors must be between the ages of 16 and 65, must weigh more than 50 kilogrammes, must lead a sexually safe lifestyle, and must be in good health.
