As the festive season approaches, an air of relaxation, light-heartedness and merry-making takes over.

It also becomes an opportune time for criminals to pounce.

Are you prepared? This question and many others were answered at Wednesday’s self-defence and what to do in an emergency situation workshop. Residents met at the AFM Church in Brickhill Road where David Allen hosted an interactive and informative workshop.

Mr Allen began his talk with calling out the Estcourt police station number – 036 342 9525/6 and the national emergency number 10111. He emphasised that when a call is made to the police, ensure that you get the officers attention by saying “I need help” immediately and giving as much information as possible like your name, address and contact number.

Thereafter residents were given practical tips about how to defend themselves if in a hijacking or house robbery situation.

Here are some of the tips:

· Shouting the word “Fire!” attracts more attention than “help.”

· Ensure that your vehicle’s doors are actually locked when you leave. Criminals use a remote control device, which jams your vehicle’s locking system.

· Ensure that your keys are in your hands when you approach your vehicle, gate or home. Do not be seen rummaging through your bag.

· If you are approached by a hi-jacker, weigh the situation. If it is safe for you to drive off, do so immediately.

· A kick in the knee is more potent than a kick to an attacker’s groin.

Many more tips were shared with the audience, as well as input from residents.

The meeting wrapped up with feedback from George van Niekerk about the neighbourhood watch in Drakensview. He said that the area had been divided into zones, which are patrolled by champions from each area.
