Bowlers bring home the turkey
The year was rounded off with Christmas meat competitions.
The monthly FedAuto meat competition was played last Saturday afternoon. Joan Schoon, Henk Zaal, Sue Hutchinson and Bert Rodgers were the winners of the competition, followed by the team of Gordon Dowsett, Roger Jackets, Trevor Vincent and Michael van der Merwe.
This was followed by the annual International Day last Sunday. Team England took the honours this year (10 + 36) followed by the Barbarians (8 + 2), Scotland (4 – 1) and South Africa (4 – 37). All players who contributed towards the breakfast and refreshments are thanked for their support.
“A special thanks to the chefs who manned the kitchen in the morning, namely Billy Nick, Graham and Andrit, Mike M, Colin & Big G,” said Burnt End himself.
A full green plus overflow participated in the annual turkey competition held on Monday afternoon, and the first prize winners taking home Christmas birds were Koen Pretorious, Michelle Steele and Bert Rodgers (10 + 18).
In second place, the winners of a gammon each donated by Graeme Robinson, were Billy Nicholas, Roger Jackets, Graeme Robinson and Aspen Shaw, the club’s youngest member at just 11 years old. Taking home a chicken each for finishing third, was the team of Douglas Steele, Trevor Moore and Mike van der Merwe (10 + 9), which was followed by the singing of carols.
The greens will be closed after bowls on December 21 and will reopen for play on January 4. The President and committee of Newcastle Bowling Club extend warm Christmas greetings to all members, as does Burnt End to all readers.
