First time swimmers prove their worth at Salga Games

Thirteen newbies proved they have great potential for competitive swimming, finishing in respectable positions at the finals of the Salga (South African Local Government Association) Games.

At the finals, which were held in Kokstad, Amajuba competed against eight other district municipalities and scooped a silver medal in the boys 13 to 14-years 100m butterfly category, fourth position in the boys 11 to 12 years 200m freestyle relay, and fifth position in the boys 11 to 12 years 200m freestyle relay.

Swimming coach, Raj Ramautar, said he was very proud of the swimmers, especially since this was the first time most them were exposed to competitive swimming.

“My goal for the new year is to motivate the swimmers to aspire to better times and introduce them to the swimming club to allow them the opportunity to compete regionally and nationally,” said Mr Ramautar. “Swimming has numerous benefits for the youth. It keeps them off the street, keeps them healthy, and helps improve their confidence.”

Mr Ramautar added that he hoped to encourage aspiring swimmers in Madadeni to make use of the Olympic sized swimming pool, the construction of which is expected to be completed by April. 11-year-old Dane Chutel, who competed in the relay event, said he hoped to be a role model for other children and to promote swimming.

Sharur Ramautar, who won a silver medal at the Salga Games, said the finals were hard work and boiled down to time and energy: “What I love best about swimming is that it is an individual sport and you know that if you put in the hard work, you can accomplish something.”
