Gusty winds and a light shower moments earlier did not dampen the spirits of the people who came to pay their last respects to former President Nelson Mandela at the memorial service held at Saturday.

The Forderville Primary School athletic track was abuzz with people who walked 27 laps around the track; this was symbolic of the time Madiba spent in prison.

The centre of attention was the middle of the track, which contained Luminaria bags etched with messages of love, respect, sadness and remembrance.

Those present, who battled against the wind, patiently lit the candles in the bags.

Once all the candles were lit, MADIBA – RIP was spelt.

Tributes and a prayer in honour of Mr Mandela followed during a short ceremony. The national anthem was sung and an atmosphere of togetherness was in the air.
