Eight people have been killed and four injured in a collision between a bakkie and a truck on the R103.

Included in the list of casualties is a four-month-old baby. The jaws-of-life were used to cut the dead and injured from the wreckage.

RTI and other emergency services responded to the accident. There was a delay in cutting the dead from the wreckage as police forensic experts were called to the scene.

“Major routes are experiencing volumes in excess of 2000-plus vehicles per hour,”said an RTI spokesperson.

They were traveling from Capetown and were going to visit family in Northern Natal.

Update story:

A collision took place between a truck and a Hilux bakkie at 3.45pm on the R102 about 15km outside Ladysmith. There were 10 people in the bakkie at the time of the accident. The bakkie was travelling towards Ladysmith while the truck was heading to Harrismith.  The bakkie and truck collided.  A taxi was forced off the road but no one was injured in it..

All the dead were in the bakkie. Two seriously injured people were transported to hospital plus two minor injured people (driver and co-driver of the truck).

Two rescue qualified paramedics, one from Sharaj ambulance services and the other from EMRS worked tirelessly to cut the dead from the wreckage. RTI were in charge of the scene.

Today and RTI appointed accident investigator arrived at the accident scene to investigate the cause of the collision.
