Pedal to the metal at annual race
Mike Viljoen completed the main race in pole position.
A lengthy road course greeted entrants into the Waterside and Checkers Cycle Challenge on Sunday.
Across the three distance categories, from a gentler 20-kilometre race, the intermediate 60km event and the exhausting 85km main race, cyclists were taken through their paces at the annual competition.
It was Mike Viljoen who finished the main race in first, with an average race speed of a tad over 37km per hour.
His finishing time was 2:16:25, just enough to fend off Victor Grobbelaar and Trevor Rowe, who took second and third respectively in times of 2:16:33 and 2:16:35.
Gwyn Pine was the pick of the veteran cyclists.
He posted a course completion time of 2:24:33 at an average pace of 35,29km/h, ahead of Collin Stroberg in 2:39:37 and Wimpie Hamilton with a time of 2:39:39.
In the 60km event, Mouritz du Plessis took pole position.
He recorded a winning time of 2:01:15 at just under 30km/h, ahead of Stelios Menelaou in 2:01:27, and Kevin Kieser, who clocked in at 2:06:47.
Reece Sclanders completed the 20km race in 51 minutes and 30 seconds.
The lone competitors in the tandem race were Conrad Ras and Hein Meyer, in a time of 2:44:15.
