Strong security measures in place at municipality

Residents are urged to avoid Scott Street if possible, as sources indicate a protest action may be due to take place today.

Almost twice the normal number of security guards have been placed at the entrance to the municipal building in Scott Street.

More private security guards have been stationed across the road from the building, and traffic police and police men and woman litter the road and the premises.

According to sources, the additional security measures have been put in place following reports that residents from Madadeni and oSizweni intend to stage a protest later today.

Circumstances surrounding the alleged protest are murky, however, a source confirmed that persons unknown had handed out pamphlets, stating that the Newcastle Municipality was a “corrupt Mafia”.

It is believed that residents have been informed about alleged tender fraud and corruption within senior management. Residents are urged to avoid Scott Street if possible.
