Gaping hole in front of bottle store

A big hole which was allegedly left open by the municipality after fixing a burst water pipe in Alfred Street opposite Maxi’s is causing problems for a local businesswoman. According to the owner of a bottle store in Alfred Street, the hole is right in front of her business premises and clients battle to get to the store.

Municipal workers dug the hole on Saturday in their efforts to repair a burst pipe, but allegedly never returned to finish the job and left the gaping hole. “They also left a huge mess in front of my store,” says the owner. She added that the hole is a hazard to customers, and that suppliers can’t bring in new stock.

“It’s dangerous and my customers are complaining about the hole. What if someone falls in? Something needs to be done quickly before someone gets hurt. Surely it should be a top priority for them (municipality) to come and sort out the situation. My customers are not happy about it at all!” fumes the businesswoman. She says she has tried to contact the municipal offices for answers, but in vain.

At the time of going to press, the municipality had failed to comment on the matter.
