Freedom Flame hits town
These celebrations focus mainly on the teachings of Mandela and the struggle he went through while fighting apartheid
Freedom Flame celebrations continued in the Ladysmith Town Hall on Monday evening, with ANC members from throughout the uThukela district filling up the hall in numbers.
The members were from Umtshezi, Imbabazane, Okhahlamba, Indaka and Emnambithi. They chanted and sang songs, showing their excitement in anticipation of seeing the Freedom Flame being brought into town. These celebrations focus mainly on the teachings of Mandela and the struggle he went through while fighting apartheid.
MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Willies Mchunu did not lead the programme as intended. He collapsed at a function in Estcourt on Saturday and was rushed to hospital. Filling in for Willies Mchunu, MEC for Economic Development, Environment & Tourism Mike Mabuyakhulu brought the flame to Ladysmith. He assured the ANC members that MEC Mchunu is well on the road to recovery. “The MEC is doing well. He’s out of hospital and his condition is not serious. The doctors just want to make sure his health is in good condition before he resumes his duties.”.
Ladysmith Mayor Vincent Madlala opened the programme and those present were given a visual display of presentations from different municipalities in the uThukela District concerning their achievements over the last 20 years of ANC rule.
