Freedom Flame celebration continues
The convoy included the SAPS, RTI, Public Safety officers, mayors and municipal officials, and officials from the office of the MEC of Community Safety & Liaison
Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality recently hosted the ’20 Years of Freedom Flame’ celebrations that symbolise 20 years into the new democracy.
The flame was in the uThukela District and the five municipalities under the district had different events they hosted to showcase the flame to the community. Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality hosted the flame on Tuesday, March 18, when the flame was showcased in a motorcade that departed from the Town Hall at around 7.30am and proceeded to the N11. The convoy displayed the flame in Driefontein and Watersmeet, showcasing the projects that the municipality has delivered to the community. From Watersmeet, the convoy proceeded through the Peacetown area and out on the Harrismith road. The convoy included the SAPS, RTI, Public Safety officers, mayors and municipal officials, and officials from the office of the MEC of Community Safety & Liaison. Community members were visibly excited to see the convoy, which was showcasing the ’20 Years of Freedom Flame’. The convoy then came into Ladysmith and proceeded through the Steadville area, showcasing the Area J housing project as well as the Steadville taxi rank. A breakfast meeting took place at the Tsakane Community Hall and then everyone proceeded to the Human Rights Commemoration event that took place at the Steadville grounds.
At the Steadville grounds, community members were part of a programme of commemorating 20 years of human rights after the apartheid regime. Emnambithi/Ladysmith Mayor Vincent Madlala spoke of the government’s achievements over the past 20 years. He and District Mayor Dudu Mazibuko emphasised the local projects that have enhanced and made the lives of the people of Ladysmith and other areas better.
A final event took place at the Ezakheni Park. The convoy, led by the Freedom Flame, took the route towards Tsakane, then to Ezakheni E-section via the Ezakheni Plaza, then finally past the Ezakheni police station and the Ezakheni taxi rank. The flame took this route to showcase the service delivery projects that Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality is proud of. Mayor Madlala and other speakers spoke of the 20 years of service delivery in Ezakheni as well. At the end of the Ezakheni Park programme, the flame went to the St Chad’s Community Healthcare Centre, where the community of St Chad’s turned up in numbers to witness the flame being in their area. The flame was then handed over to the Amajuba District in the Dannhauser Municipality.
