Do I go home today?

We all know what happens when these loving friends don't find a home in time

Every week I read the articles on the Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL) and each time I am saddened to see the gorgeous pets who are in desperate need of a good home. Although a pet is a huge responsibility and commitment, and one must be sure they have the time, money and love for these darling animals. We all know what happens when these loving friends don’t find a home in time, but I would like to share a poem I found on the Internet, by Anonymous. It is entitled, “Do I go home today?”

“My family members brought me home, all cradled in their arms. They cuddled me and smiled at me and praised me for my charms. They played with me and laughed with me and showered me with toys. I love them so, especially the darling girls and boys. The children used to feed me, they gave me special treats. They even let me sleep with them- all snuggled in their sheets. I used to go for lots of walks, many times a day. They even fought to hold the leash, I’m very proud to say. These are things I’ll not forget, a cherished memory. Now I’m at the shelter- without my family.

I used to get their laughs and praise when playing with that shoe. But did not know the difference between the old shoe and the new. The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug. Didn’t I do the right thing when I chewed the bedroom rug? They said that I was out of control and had to live outside. This I did not understand, although I tried and tried. The walks diminished, one by one, they said they didn’t have the time. I wish I could’ve changed things, but didn’t know my crime. My life became so lonely in the backyard, on a chain. I kept on barking all day long to keep from going insane.

They brought me to the shelter- embarrassed to say why. They said I caused an allergy, and then they kissed me goodbye. If only I’d had classes, as a little pup, I wouldn’t have been so hard to handle when I was grown up. “You only have but one day left” I heard a worker say. Does that mean I’ve a second chance? Do I go home today?”
