IEC Members threaten to strike

If current events continue, Election Day will be compromised.

About 600 of the 900 Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) members are threatening to strike if their demands are not met.

The members who are threatening to strike are also part of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu).

Their demands are the dismissal of current chairperson, Pansy Tlakula, as well as changing the IEC’s anti-union approach. The members are also demanding compensation for work done on special projects, fair implementation of the pool car system and compensation for overtime.

According to Nehawu official, Sizwe Phamla, Nehawu officials will be consulting with the members exactly a month before the general elections, which will be taking place on May 7.

If current events continue, Election Day will be compromised. It is also unclear whether or not the IEC has any back-up plans or how they will go about the situation.
