A community in distress

RESIDENTS at the SASKO (Bhekuzulu Extension 16) area, which is nothing new to controversy following last year’s issues of blocked drains and sewage over-flows, say that they have been led to believe that this area is deteriorating as the years go by and the municipality has ditched them.
Community members say that the roads in the area are crumbling and they suspect that the land on which their homes were built was not surveyed properly.
An elderly community member, Grandmother Nomusa Nyembe, lives in a house that seems to have been built on a wetland of some sort. Nomusa who lives with her three grandchildren, two of whom are still too young for school, says that the area all around their house is always wet and muddy and she suspects that the water may be rising from underground.
“The children get sick with flu very often and I fear for their safety. There is no dry area on which they can play in our yard, they often head out to the streets and this is very dangerous as they may get hit by cars,” said Nomusa.
Many homes in the area have different problems of one form or another including the houses not having ventilators which has proven to be a huge health hazard as these houses still do not have electricity and many households use gas-cylinders for appliances such as stoves and refrigerators.
