Life sentence for Nongoma rapist
Mcabangeleni Gumbi, who fell asleep after raping his victim, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his crime.
NONGOMA Regional Court convicted and sentenced Mcabangeleni Gumbi, 25, of Ophalule area, to life imprisonment for rape on Monday, April 7.
On Thursday, August 8, 2013, the accused went to the victim’s room at Ophalule area, Nongoma and demanded cash from her. The victim did not have any cash with her.
The accused then raped the victim and fell asleep afterwards, allowing the victim the opportunity to escape.
The victim reported the incident to the police and a case of rape was opened at Nongoma police station for further investigation.
Through investigation with the help of the community, the accused was arrested and charged for rape.
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the work done by Nongoma detectives which led to the arrest and conviction of the accused.
She also commended the local community members for assisting the local police in this matter and further encouraged the victims of rape not to be afraid of reporting such crimes even if they are being intimidated by the culprits.
