Charred animals a testament to decline
Burnt remains in an alleyway have sparked residents' ire.
Charred animal heads and festering refuse are the tip of the veritable litter iceberg for businesses in the Paterson Street vicinity.
While business owners and staff are disgusted at the deplorable state of the arcade linking Paterson and Voortrekker Streets, the scandalous aftermath of prostitution has truly sparked their ire. One employee described how each morning, used toilet paper and soiled condoms had to be cleared away. From the physical evidence scoured from the pavements each day, it is apparent prostitutes entertain clients in the narrow grassy area between businesses and the municipal officials’ fenced parking area.
“The prostitutes even hide in the bushes behind the businesses,” the employee exclaimed in horror.
“People who enter from the rear have to see this mess.”
Other problems, perhaps stemming from ongoing prostitution in the area, include vagrants setting refuse and municipal skips alight, and general filth in and around the cordoned off parking area.
The employee said raging fires day after day caused a layer of ash to settle on surfaces in her business.
“We sometimes see them sniffing glue in the parking lot.”
A closer inspection of the area did indeed confirm the presence of open tins of glue littered about the area, as well as the horrifying charred remains of at least two animals.The smouldering bovine meat left a lingering putrid smell in the air.
Despite municipal officials allegedly promising to lend a hand to assist businesses with the filthy problem, the employee said an inspector was seen only once.
Further comment from the municipality was not forthcoming at the time of going to print.
In the meantime, residents are forced to confront a host of disgusting remains, in some ways a revolting testament to the decline of societal morals and deserved services from government.
