Labour Dept offices ravaged by fire

THE offices of the Department of Labour in Landdrost Street suffered a major fire last night. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

It appears to have started in the public front waiting area, the ceiling of which is all but destroyed, while the official area behind the consultants appears to have escaped complete destruction, with just the ceiling being blistered in areas. The heat buckled the roof in places.

The services of the Department will obviously be interrupted until such time as the records and data damage has been assessed and temporary premises can be arranged.
