Political parties will be fined

ACCORDING to the law, political parties had 10 days after the elections to remove their campaign posters. According to standard election rules, parties had until the Saturday after the elections to remove the posters.

However, after discussions were held, it was decided that parties would be given a few extra days to remove posters before governmental contractors were set out to start removing them. Although this is the case, many of these posters urging community members to vote for various political parties still cling to many lampposts all around town.

This law seems to apply to some and not all local political parties as is shown by who has removed their posters and who hasn’t. According to the law, parties that fail to comply may be fined between R50 to R88.40 per poster and R126.90 per pasted poster removed.

According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) the removal was regulated by municipal by-laws and they were not involved.
