Police crack down on copper thieves
Approximately 80 kg of copper to the value of R50 000 was confiscated.
Five suspected copper thieves were arrested yesterday afternoon by the Newcastle SAPS K9 Unit.
Cluster Head of Communications, Captain Shooz Magudulela confirmed the arrest.
“Constable Bongani Sibisi and Constable Mandla Dlamini were patrolling the footpaths and dead roads, in an attempt to stem the flow of copper coming from the industrial area,” he said.
The K9 Unit tackled the five suspects just before they could reach a scrap metal retailer.
According to a statement issued by Captain Magudulela, approximately 80 kg of copper to the value of R50 000 was confiscated.
The five suspects, all between the ages of 19 and 25, are expected to appear in court on Friday.
