A glimmer of hope for Finnemore Street
“Fines can be imposed on people who dump illegally. At present the fine is R750 and when our new by-laws are promulgated, fines will range from between R 1000 to R 30 000, depending on the category of waste."

Illegal dumping along Finnemore Street is an ongoing problem caused by irresponsible residents.
However, Nick Swanepoel from Waste Management, said the municipality would be erecting ‘No-Dumping’ signs in the area.
Although some residents felt it would not deter culprits, Mr Swanepoel gave the assurance that those caught could face harsh penalties.

The money spent on the prevention of illegal dumping could rather be spent by the municipality to provide infrastructure, he said.
To ensure Finnemore Street and Newcastle stay clean, Mr Swanepoel requested the community to report illegal dumping to the municipality.
“Please report illegal dumping to our control room on 034 3284 750,” concluded Mr Swanepoel.
