On June 11, Newcastle K9 Unit arrested five suspects between the ages of 19 and 25, for the possession of copper believed to have been stolen.
Constable Bongani Sibisi and Constable Mandla Dlamini were on patrol and apprehended the suspects just before they reached a scrap metal dealer to sell the copper.
“The theft of copper has affected the town, as certain cables run through robots and railway lines. About 80kg of copper have been confiscated with an estimated value of about R50 000,” said Captain Shooz Magudulela.
They are expected to appear before Newcastle Magistrate’s Court soon.
