Education staff allegedly held ‘hostage’
According to reports, members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) locked staff members inside their building.
Inside sources claimed staff of the district Education Department were held ‘hostage’ by a union last week.
According to reports, members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) locked staff members inside their building, while awaiting answers on numerous matters yet unresolved.
These workers were only released in the early hours of the next morning.
Sources further alleged SADTU was seeking response from the district director on non-payment of teachers, suspension of certain staff, non-advertising of posts and job selling.
It is also believed the tension was exacerbated by conflict between rival unions.
Both the district director of the Education Department and the district chairman of SADTU were unavailable for comment at the time of going to print, and inquiries to the department’s office were inexplicably referred to SADTU for comment.
A meeting was scheduled on Wednesday morning to lay the cards on the table, hopefully resolving the dispute.
