Grab your blood buddy for the Memel Walk

Dust off your tekkies, and get your sun caps out!

The 2014 Blood Buddy Memel Walk will take place on August 9 this year. Two decades ago, three teachers and nine pupils from Amajuba High School started the event, and since then, it has developed into an annual attraction for the whole family.

Johan Pieters, who is one of the organisers and former Head Boy of Amajuba High School, said he was part of the original crew who started the first event back in 1994.

“Various celebrities took part in the event over the years,” explained Mr Pieters. These celebrities included Nick Bester, James Small, Henry Honiball, Bruce Fordyce and David Vlok.

“The idea through the years has remained the same – let’s support charity.”

Last year, Champ Marketing took over the organisation of the event and included more categories – the 50km run and the 58.4km mountain bike race – in the hope of attracting more participants to raise money for a good cause.

The event this year will feature the following categories:

55km Run

55 km Mountain Bike Race

55 km Individual Walk

55km Relay Team (Five members per team)

The 2014 event will be special in many ways. Starting at the NG Church in Memel, it will end at Huttenpark Primary School, who will be hosting the Huttenpark Carnival on the same day.

There will also be a car up for grabs, with tickets available from the school. Walkers will be able to have a warm shower after the event, and be ready to spend the day enjoying the carnival with their families.
