Following information received from liquor distributors based in Durban, the Firearms, Liquor and Second Hand Dealers (FLASH) unit conducted a raid on two liquor outlets.
Altogether 51 bottles of alcohol were confiscated by FLASH during a raid.
It was suspected the alcohol was heavily laced with ethanol and diluted with water.
“The Brand House investigator confirmed the bottles have been tampered with. Liquor bottles have to be sealed according to certain specifications and it is clear the caps were removed and resealed with glue,” said Captain Jerry Lutchman.
SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Magudulela said, “We went to the CBD on July 4, where we recovered 22 bottles of whiskey, nine bottles of brandy and 20 vodka bottles.”. The community must be careful when it comes to buying alcohol, whether in a bottle or a can. Residents are urged to report establishments selling liquor in bottles that have been tampered with.”
The alcohol has a estimated value of R10 000. Two of the bottles of liquor have been opened for use in the investigation.
“Two cases of fraud have been opened against the owners of the tavern and bottle store,” said Capt. Lutchman.
The businesses cannot be identified as investigations are under way.
