Newcastle Advertiser and Sun donate food to residents of Siyahlala-la

With this in mind, the Newcastle Advertiser and Newcastle Sun planned a donation of food to some residents of Siyahlala-la, as part of our contribution towards 67 minutes on Mandela Day.

Having three square meals a day is something many people take for granted, but for many residents of Siyahlala-la, even one meal a day is a blessing. With this in mind, the Newcastle Advertiser and Newcastle Sun planned a donation of food to some residents of Siyahlala-la, as part of our contribution towards 67 minutes on Mandela Day. With a target of 500 people, employees took time off to prepare and distribute food hampers, each comprising of a peanut butter and jam sandwich, a box of juice and a packet of chips. “Even though we started off with the intention to play our part on Mandela Day, the day was so much more than that. For many of the team, visiting Siyahlala-la was not just a first, but also an eye-opener. Some of the children asked for more than one parcel; for many, it was probably the only meal they would get,” explained Newcastle Advertiser Editor, Reveshni Douglas. Sales representatives, administration staff, and journalists tried to reach everybody in the seemingly never-ending lines of children and residents. “It was such an eye-opener knowing that people live in such conditions right around the corner from Lennoxton,” said Advertising Manager, Cherryl Mungal. This act was just a small kindness rendered to those less fortunate than most, and with this in mind, residents are encouraged to lend a helping to those in dire straights, whenever possible. The Newcastle Advertiser and Sun express their sincere appreciation to North City Wholesalers for their generous contribution towards making 67 minutes special for the residents of Siyahlala-la.
