Children’s future brightens on Mandela Day
With 20 orphans, only six beds, no proper toilets, and a hole in the budget, it was clear that the home was in dire need of help.

Motivated by the plight of Children are our Future orphanage, Nashua Maluti decided to dedicate its 67 minutes for Mandela Day helping the orphanage.
With 20 orphans, only six beds, no proper toilets, and a hole in the budget, it was clear that the home was in dire need of help.
Not only does the orphanage function as a safe haven for orphans, it also caters for children from oSizweni as a crèche.
Speaking to the founder of the childrens home, Jabu Nkonyane, it becomes clear she is passionate about helping the community in whatever way she can, although available funds are always insufficient.
“We started building proper toilets for the children, but because we did not have enough money, we could only build half the walls,” she explained.
The orphanage barely survives by means of a community vegetable garden that also provides for all needy members of the community.
The orphanage also doubles as a soup kitchen for those needy children attending the crèche.
“We have been lucky; many businesses have helped us out before, but things are very difficult. The funds we get from the Department of Social Development is not enough, and the orphanage is too small for the children,” Ms Nkonyane reluctantly admitted.
Gareth Korb of Nashua Maluti, organised the donation of beds, blankets, toiletries and groceries to the orphanage.
Over and above this donation, employees of Nashua also spent time with the children of the orphanage.
“These things many of us take for granted, but here there are 20 orphans and other children who visit this crèche who don’t event have something as basic as a toothbrush,” explained Mr Korb.
Mr Korb believed the orphanage desperately needed assistance from the community at large.
“This organisation does not get the recognition it deserves for the work it does, and thus we need to join hands and help out,” he encouraged.
Nashua wished to extend its thanks to SASKO for donating towards this worthy effort.
