Sister Gopi’s passion sees her working after 52 years service

A passion for helping others and caring for the elderly, motivated Rantha Gopi to dedicate 52 years of her life to nursing.

Sister Gopi, who turns 70 this year, started her career as a trainee nurse at St Aidan’s Hospital in Durban. She later relocated to Newcastle.

“I worked at the Provincial Hospital for 22 years and then went over to the Municipal Clinic, where I worked until I went on pension,” said Sister Gopi.

It was then when she was introduced to La Gratitude.

“I was asked to come and work for the home, which I did for a year. However, I went back to the clinic and worked there again until I had to go on pension at the age of 65,” she said.

Upon her return to the clinic, Sister Gopi studied primary health care.

“I have now been back at La Gratitude for the past four years and will stay here for as long as possible,” she said with conviction.

While many might welcome retirement with open arms, Sister Gopi felt it was her work that kept her healthy.

“It is good to keep on working, as it keeps my mind and body stimulated. I would advise all elderly people to keep doing something,” Sister Gopi claimed.

As matron at La Gratitude, Sister Gopi said she could relate to the needs of the residents, as she is an elderly person herself.

“My work is very fulfilling. I am here from 6am to make sure I am able to see everyone and know what is going on,” she explained.

“A lot of people focus on children, but the elderly also need our attention and in many ways they need more help. I would advise people to take care of their elderly; they built the foundations for us and this is now their time to be comfortable and be cared for,” concluded Sister Gopi.
