The life of Attie van Zyl hung in the balance after three men attacked him over the weekend in Bloemfontein.
According to the latest report released by Volksblad, Attie is now at home and on the road to recovery.

Attie’s parents, Dr Nico and Ilse van Zyl told Volksblad they had viewed the surveillance footage in the presence of the Bloemfontein police, and spoke about the horrifying actions captured.
“Acording to witnesses the three attackers hit Attie with their fists on the porch of the KFC,” said Mrs van Zyl. “We believe one of the three young men who attacked him, who we assume to be in their mid-twenties, hit Attie’s head against the cement sidewalk a number of times.”
Mrs van Zyl told Volksblad that it was unbelievable how people just stood by and watched the attack happen.
“Apparently a group of young people gathered around, while witnesses said my son was choking on his own blood. KFC staff also made no effort to help, while the security guards stationed at the complex also did nothing.”
An ambulance was summoned, and after waiting too long three men took Attie to the hospital with their bakkie. According to the report, they feared for his life and could not wait any longer.
Reportedly, the police have identified the suspects, and the investigation is continuing.
After being discharged on Wednesday night, the Van Zyl family travelled over night back to Newcastle, where Attie will be nursed at home for the next month.
“He is very traumatised and will need treatment, other than the pain,” said Mrs van Zyl. “As parents, we are extremely grateful that he is alive and we thank the men who took him to the hospital. They saved his life.”
