Six people. including two children, were killed on Sunday evening when two vehicles collided on the N11 at the Elandslaagte off ramp.
Four others suffered serious injuries. It appears as if one of the vehicles had turned in front of an oncoming car travelling on the Newcastle bound lane of the N11.
Paramedics from ER24 and KwaZulu Natal Emergency Services that arrived on the scene found the occupants outside of their vehicles with several injuries. Upon assessment they found that six people, including an eight and four year old child, which succumbed to their injuries. It is believed that they were all from the same vehicle.
Paramedics found four people near the second vehicle with serious injuries. They were treated on the scene before being rushed off to Laverna Hospital in Ladysmith for further medical management. Majority of them sustained multiple fractures and possible spinal injuries.
The exact cause of the collision is not yet known. The Pietermaritzburg Motor Vehicle Accident Unit is investigating.
In another accident yesterday, a passenger died of injuries suffered in another head one collision on the R33, between Dundee and Greytown – this being the second major collision this week. Paramedics treated two patients on scene for critical injuries and another for serious injuries.
“The patients were transported to the Church of Scotland hospital and when handing over the patients, one of the patients whose condition had been critical, worsened and this patient subsequently passed away despite the desperate interventions of the medical staff,” said Robert McKenzie EMRS spokesman.
