Honorary Officers organise birding weekends for conservation

iThala Honorary Officers organise birding weekends to raise funds for conservation and protect the reserve’s natural environment.

The iThala Honorary Officers are organising a series of birding weekends to raise funds for conservation efforts at iThala Game Reserve.

Birding with a conservation purpose

The weekends give bird enthusiasts an opportunity to spend time in the bush while supporting the work being done to conserve the reserve’s natural environment. All proceeds from the weekends go directly towards conservation efforts at iThala.

Participants will join birding drives in an open safari vehicle, accompanied by opportunities to observe the reserve’s diverse birdlife. More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the area, including several birds of prey and species associated with different habitats.

The three-day programme includes afternoon and early-morning birding drives, with the Honorary Officers hosting meals during the weekend. Participants will stay at Mhlangeni Bush Camp.

Upcoming dates for 2026 and 2027

The remaining weekends scheduled for 2026 are November 6 to 8 and November 20 to 22. Two more weekends are planned for March 5 to 7 and March 26 to 28, 2027.

Each weekend is limited to 10 participants.
