VRYHEID Tourism Association together with the AbaQulusi Municipality played host to learners and educators from England’s Bristol Grammar School on Friday, August 1.

Alet and Christo Swanepoel opened their farm, Farm Beaufort, to the touring teams from Bristol Grammar School, who played rugby, hockey and netball against Pioneer High School later that afternoon, and shared with the visitors the beauty, history and culture that Vryheid holds.

Guest speakers were invited to enrich the experience for the pupils and teachers, with Mrs T Yaka opening the meeting with a scripture reading and prayer, following which, Mr Venter from Pioneer High School welcomed the visitors on behalf of the school.

Mr Muhl, a local farmer, accompanied by his wife, delivered an intriguing account on farming and how it has adapted and progressed over the years, due to technological advances.

Thereafter, the visitors were treated to a fascinating and informative presentation by Wilfred Mchunu, who explained the history of the Battlefields Route as only a seasoned tour guide such as himself could.

Vryheid Tourism members, along with their helpers, put together an entertaining and educational experience for the visitors from Bristol Grammar School and even went the extra mile by preparing an array of traditional foods for them to sample, with an emphasis on the diversity of Vryheid’s population. There were koeksisters, pancakes, samoosas, cucumber sandwiches, biltong, boerewors rolls and amagwinyas with polony, to name just a few of the treats provided.

Christo and Alet Swanepoel also arranged a guided tour for the pupils who wanted to explore the farm and the captivating mountain overlooking the farmhouse. Some pupils chose to enjoy the breathtaking scenery from the garden, but many joined the trek up the mountain.

Vryheid Tourism and the AbaQulusi Municipality wish to thank the sponsors who made the event possible. Vryheid Community Policing Forum, who made the pancakes; Villa Beryl Guesthouse; Andrea’s Guesthouse; Phumlani Lodge; Mountain View Guesthouse; Vital Signs; Debonairs and Steers (Mr Kruger); Mrs EV Muhl; Um-Faan Biltong and Vleis; Tinus from West End and RSA Landscaping.
