Bird Sanctuary gets a revamp

THE Honorary Officers (HO) report that the Klipfontein Bird Sanctuary in the wetlands suffered a really hot burnout this year.

The “Morris Christie Hide” suffered a lot of fire damage. Vryheid HO’s are getting the Sanctuary back in working order, ready for the upcoming breeding season. Good news is that the Fish Eagles have already started and are nesting.

There are also a lot of Sacred Ibis and smaller water birds around, and as soon as the reeds grow out a bit , all the LBJ’s (Little Brown Jobs) will be back.

The rejuvenating annual fires are actually a blessing in disguise, if the hides can be protected.

The HOs would like to see more people take an interest in the sanctuary, especially school groups. Anybody is welcome to visit the sanctuary and HO Francis Fynn will be available most afternoons to accompany you, as the hide is kept locked to discourage undesirables.
