Newcastle Art Expo

With the Newcastle Art Expo only a few days away, exhibitors are concluding their preparations for the one day event at the Farmers Hall on Saturday, August 16 from 9am to 12 noon.

The line-up of exhibitors for 2014 expo is fast-growing, featuring the best local talent Newcastle and its surrounds has to offer.

The Art Gallery aims to make the 2014 expo the biggest yet, inviting more artists to book stalls as soon as possible. People working with textiles, leather, glass, beads, semi-precious stones, mosaics, clay or any other craft or art medium are welcome to register for the event.

Four cultural tables will exhibit and demonstrate the traditions of the Afrikaans, Chinese, Indian and Zulu people of the world. The tables are sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture in the Amajuba region.

Gita and Dave Sewpersad are organising the Indian exhibit. Their exhibit features a demonstration on mendhi painting. Visitors will also learn about the Eastern healing technique, Reiki, which develops balance and equilibrium in a person. There will also be traditional musical instruments and other Indian arts on display.

At the Zulu table, hand coiled Zulu pot building by Ma Mthabela from Msinga, wood carving by Nongoma carver, Bheki Gumbi, and weaving by Bheki Nkosi will be demonstrated.

The Strelitzia Club will exhibit objects reflecting the unique cultural identity of the Afrikaans people, while the Chinese School displays exotic object d’art from Taiwan and the East. There will also be an opportunity to try your hand at bead work on the day.
