Nightmare for family on Elm street
According to reports, the 'reckless' driver was alone in the vehicle, while both parents and three children, aged 18, six and five, were in the other vehicle returning home when the incident occurred.
A family visiting relatives were endangered after an allegedly reckless driver collided with their vehicle on Elm Street earlier today.
According to reports, the ‘reckless’ driver was alone in the vehicle, while both parents and three children, aged 18, six and five, were in the other vehicle returning home when the incident occurred.
Witnesses on scene described the incident:
“He was driving very fast, and turned onto Elm Street from Wilger Street. He crashed into the sidewalk and then continued driving before hitting the other car,” alleged witnesses.
One of the family members involved in the collision claimed the man then attempted to drive away but was forced to stop and make a break for it on foot, after one of his tyres suffered a blow-out.
He returned to the scene minutes later, pretending to be a bystander.
“I caught him and took him to the cops there, but he denied everything,” said the family member.
Officials on scene charged the young man for driving recklessly and without a licence.
It was further alleged that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol, due to sensory signs.
“Unfortunately, we could not test him for alcohol abuse, because we did not have breathalyser kits on hand, and we were unable to get any on-scene,” explained one official.
The mother and the driver of the family vehicle have since been taken to the Madadeni Provincial Hospital for treatment of moderate chest wounds.
