A mother cradles her young baby in a bundle, while other people nearby clutch at their injuries moaning in pain.
This was the scene paramedics were faced with earlier today, after two taxis collided with each other on the P483 between Newcastle and Madadeni.
Evidence on-scene suggests that one of the taxi drivers had allegedly been driving negligently, when they allegedly attempted to over-take a vehicle on a blind rise.
This mistake apparently led to the deaths of two people.
It is believed that one of the deceased was the driver of one of the vehicles, while the other was a passenger.
Paramedics on scene worked tirelessly to quickly assess the injured, and transport the victims to the nearby Madadeni Provincial Hospital.
ER24 spokesman, Jan Henk Van Vuuren, issued a statement regarding the injured to on scene journalists.
“A total of 19 people were injured during the collision. Four of those injured were in a critical state, and were the first to be taken to hospital.”
A total of 21 people were involved in the collision, two of whom lost their lives.
One of the drivers of the taxis involved, has survived the incident, and Protection Services officials were forced to extricate him from the taxi using the jaws of life.
On scene officials worked tirelessly to help the victims, and the road has since been closed to allow officials the freedom to work, and to keep the scene from being damaged.
“We should have the road open up again by 5pm,” believed one official.
Investigations into the possible negligent driving allegations have been launched.
