THE annual Clivia Show which was held last Saturday means the Winter is coming to an end and Spring is around the corner. In the middle of such a dry period, it is refreshing to see such a profusion of colour, and when about 160 clivia plants are assembled in one place for a show, the scene is spectacular.
The show was again held in the NRS hall, and was very well attended. It would seem there is a growing interest in clivias, a plant that is indigenous to the eastern parts of South Africa.
The judges on Saturday were Liz Boyd from Howick and Francois van Rooyen from Greytown (the person in charge of the World Clivia Conference to be held in Pietermaritzburg), and from all reports they were very impressed by the standards in Vryheid. Most points on show was achieved by Louis Lotter with 92 points, with runner-up Leon van Rooyen achieving 62 points. Louis Lotter’s Andrew Gibson clivia was adjudged Best Plant on Show.
