When Mrs van Wyk was drawn as the weekly winner of the Ladysmith Gazette R500 grocery voucher, she chose to receive her R500 prize from De Franca’s Spar.

When arriving at the store to collect her prize, she was in for a shock. Spar had decided to double her prize, ensuring that she received a whopping R1000 in grocery vouchers.

In tears, Mrs van Wyk, who is a resident of the Koekie Jacobsz Senior Centre, expressed her thanks to both the Ladysmith Gazette and Spar manager Greg De Franca.

“God does answer prayers,” she told our reporter. “Surviving on a pension is not easy,” she added.
