Residents disgusted by overflowing sewer drains on Victoria Road
“I reported the problem to the municipality on the third of this month; it is now the ninth and the drain has continued to leak for days on end,” said an infuriated resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Residents on Victoria Road are unhappy about the lack of attention given by the municipality to the overflowing sewer drains located adjacent to the road.
“I reported the problem to the municipality on the third of this month; it is now the ninth and the drain has continued to leak for days on end,” said an infuriated resident who wished to remain anonymous.
In Newcastle Advertiser’s recent Ask the Mayor column, a question pertaining to the issue was submitted to the mayor, and it read as follows: “…I want to inquire if the muni is planning to revamp the very old sewerage and electricity assets in Newcastle? They keep breaking down?” [sic], to which Newcastle Mayor, Afzul Rehman, responded, “Yes we are. We have budgeted millions of Rands to upgrade electricity and have spent in excess of R100-million on sewer upgrades. We will continue to do this, with this year adding in upgrades of water pipes”
Hannes Liebenberg, a resident and former Ward 4 councillor, commented, “It doesn’t help to just stop the leak; the municipality needs to find the root of the problem. I know that the current ward councillor has reported the problem and yet it continues to get no attention.”
This is not an isolated incident; on numerous occasions similar drains have reportedly been overflowing in various areas of Newcastle.
