Protection order offers little protection
Apparently, the suspect gained access to the home and shot his ex-girlfriend, her current boyfriend and their tenant, seriously wounding them all.
A 23-year-old man was sentenced at Newcastle’s Magistrate’s Court recently to ten years’ imprisonment for attempted murder.
The suspect paid his ex-girlfriend an unexpected visit at the residence where she was residing with another man. Apparently, the suspect gained access to the home and shot his ex-girlfriend, her current boyfriend and their tenant, seriously wounding them all.
It is alleged the victim obtained a protection order against the suspect in April, 2012. The shooting took place a month later.
Police later managed to recover the firearm at Nongoma with the assistance of informants. The suspect’s uncle handed him over to police after hearing of the shooting.
The suspect was further declared unfit to posses a firearm.
Newcastle detectives are pleased with the sentence and regard convictions like this as a deterrent for people in possession of firearms.
Police thanked the community for their co-operation and assistance in solving the case.
