Newcastle Crisis Centre a place of safety for trafficking victims

Newcastle Crisis Centre has been recognised as a place of safety for victims of human trafficking.

Mary Dobbie, crisis centre director, explained a process was in the pipeline to officially put victims in the centre’s care for counselling and help.

While no cases have yet been linked to Newcastle, Mrs Dobbie claimed human trafficking was a harsh reality that could not be ignored. She felt it was vital people were aware of this crime that was often hidden in the shadows of society.

What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking can be considered as modern day slavery, and can affect men and women alike.

Mrs Dobbie said traffickers often lured their victims with promises of high paying jobs in foreign countries. This was a method, teenagers often fell victim to. She urged people to be vigilant when applying for this kind of job. “If you see a vacancy for an overseas job with only a cellphone number, it is a scam,” she warned.

While women and teenage girls were often used as sex slaves by traffickers, Mrs Dobbie said young boys could also be prostituted.

“Victims of trafficking are not always used as sex slaves though.There are people who are enslaved in factories and farms as well,” she continued.

While linking human trafficking to syndicates that enforced horrific methods to control their victims, Mrs Dobbie said there was help for those wishing to escape the bonds of slavery.
