Juvenile suspects apprehended for vandalising Oval Track
The boys were overheard telling police they had done it 'just for fun'.
Newcastle SAPS K9 Unit members apprehended four teenage boys between the ages of 12 and 16 on Monday, in connection with vandalism at the Oval Track.
Two of the youngsters broke into the ablution block at the Oval Track, and proceeded to destroy the toilets and light fixtures.
According to Boet Buys, manager of the Oval Track, the intention was obviously not theft.
“They broke everything, even the mechanisms inside the cisterns, the globes, the mirrors and the paper towel dispenser,” he said.
“It is obvious they were not trying to steal anything, but simply destroy property.”
One of the boys was overheard telling a police officer that they had done it ‘just for fun’.The two younger boys later told one of the mothers who arrived on scene that the older boys had threatened to hit them if they did not climb inside the bathrooms and break things.
All four boys are believed to have been bunking school at the time.
A man conducting maintenance work to the grounds managed to help the police apprehend the boys.
The estimated damage to the property is almost R10 000, this according to Mr Buys who spoke under correction after assessing the damage.
The incident comes on the heels of a burglary at the Oval Track Club House, where alcohol to the estimated value of R2 000 was stolen.
