Halloween – trick or treat or something sinister

Opinions divided on this festival which is widely celebrated - especially in the USA

We asked: What are your thoughts on Halloween? Is it evil or merely a day for some fun?
Let us know…. the results shows that readers have mixed feelings on this ancient festival but some still have a great sense of humour too..

Pieter de Bruin: It’s an American thing and its apartheid’s fault that it ended up in Dundee/Glencoe.

Neale Ashton Ture Rundgren: I, for one,, and this ‘holiday’ is no different than any other celebration. Unfortunately, Halloween has been heavily commercialised by America and has thus lost all meaning and purpose.

Karishma Juggan: In America they have a lot of fun and exciting festivals and celebrations. in South Africa people want to always find a hidden satanic meaning behind everything. We can never kick back and joy because of all the stories and drama’s soon to follow. Why not for once see the fun behind it and enjoy it. I believe we are only prone to evil if we have an evil mind and thoughts, if we see the good and laughter behind certain festivals we have nothing to fear. Just my opinion…
Terry-lee Honiball: There are a lot of narrow-minded comments. It is a day that some like to enjoy. Things have the power you give them, so overall it is not even remotely evil (that made me giggle a bit) if you believe it is evil, so be it, but it’s just a day. Just like Valentines Day. The celebration of this day does not let loose love; the people do (mostly haha). So, evil? I think not.

Moira Appleby Jones: I come on people! Relax! It’s an American thing just to make money…. Forget about delving into Devils and so on. I’m sure anyone who “tricks or treats” doesn’t even thinks of that! Especially children.
Kim Burgess: It comes from All Hallows Eve or All Saints Eve – nothing to do with Satan, actually Halloween is reportedly from Christian origin – it was meant to be a day to remember the dead and saints.
No day is evil or godly – it is people’s actions that dictate what it is…
I personally don’t participate and it is just another day to me.
Helen Schulman: Satan’s birthday – no fun in that! Sick to celebrate or take part. I have far better things to do with my time.

Lucia Hoffman Brunkhorst: No Kim – it is not of Christian origin. The early church fathers (Catholics) took pagan festivals and tried to make them “Christian” – but a pig dressed as a lamb is still a pig. And of course Satan will make EVIL FUN! How else will he sell it… So I hope that Christians will shun this festival with the disdain it deserves!

Charlotte Coltart: It is most definitely evil. Another way for Satan to get to our children. Let’s call it what it is EVIL and stop glamorising it as so called fun
Peter Korff : It’s just American so leave it over the waters where it belongs in America and let them carry on like the bunch of idiots they are

Terry-lee Honiball: Put it this way Lucia, if your faith is strong you have nothing to fear about this “evil” occasion. So call me naive as much as you would like to, it’s just not the case as I know I have nothing to fear about a little bit of fun and games.

Mithun Govender;  No harm, in a bit of harmless fun. After all, it’s what you make of it…

Corrie Joubert: I don’t think anything about it because it has no relevance for SA. It is an overseas tradition, I think a little evil.
Pierre Duval: Should just be great fun and I can’t see how dressing up can be seen as evil. As for handing out candy I wish it was safe but I fear there are too many sick people in the world to allow me to allow my kids to do it. Otherwise I would have no problem.
Jenny Lambertelli Halforty: Who needs Halloween, when u lives in Africa!

Kotie Jonker: NO FUN at all! My 3 honde en kat is vreeslik bang ek moet hulle in die huis hou en hulle kalm hou. Dis hoekom ek nie vir my kinders Crackers koop nie.
Jan Erasmus: Pieter de Bruin summed it up perfectly…….great humor.

Clarissa Anne Korff: I don’t think it’s evil, but we never bothered with it before so why now? We live in South Africa not America anyway.
Ilse Van Rensburg: In NZ they do Halloween; but we don’t “celebrate” it and the kids know that they can’t go trick or treating. Instead the churches have a light party where families can go and have fun; dressed up if you want-but no dark or evil costumes. Kids love it. There are rides, food games…much more fun than go begging for lollies I say.

Lisa Scheepers: Evil

Lucia Hoffman Brunkhorst: Terry-lee – you are naive – look at how these people dress up… evil is as evil does – and it is as easy as that…
