55 LEARNERS and educators visited the Carnegie Library (Information Bureau); Lucas Meijer Museum and Klipkerk (Old Stone Church) recently.

Their intention was to find out more about the early days of Vryheid, to discover the Museums and National Monuments of Vryheid.

At the Abaqulusi Municipality Information Bureau, Mrs Alet Swanepoel, the Tourism Officer, highlighted the history of the Carnegie Library, mentioning a few points.

The library was built with money donated by the American Carnegie Foundation; it was the first library in Vryheid and was built in 1909. It is also a National Monument, which is now functioning as the Abaqulusi Municipality Tourism Office.
