Rape suspect waves to the FCS unit
“His arrest will keep him inside this festive season and there might be fewer rapes as a result,”
Members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit were stunned to see a rape suspect they had been searching for a long time, wave at them on Voortrekker Street recently.
The brazen suspect had been released on bail in 2012 for the rape of a 14-year-old, but failed to appear for his sentencing, whereupon a warrant for his arrest was issued.
When he realised he was identified by FCS, he tried to escape.
Constable Dududu Ngubeni chased the 54-year-old suspect on foot, through an alley. Sergeant Sthembi Makhuba joined the chase with his vehicle.
The suspect turned back on Murchison Street and fled towards the court.
Leaving the vehicle on the intersection of Voortrekker and Murchison streets with Nellie Zulu to call for back up, Sergeant Makhuba joined Constable Ngubeni in the chase on foot. The suspect was apprehended near Newcastle Magistrate’s Court.
Station Commander of Newcastle SAPS, Brigadier Bhekani Buthelezi, commended the FCSA members who arrested the perpetrator.
“His arrest will keep him inside this festive season and there might be fewer rapes as a result,” he commented.
