Update- Weenen Taxi Rank dislodges- vehicles damaged

Upon arriving I witnessed a large number of corrugated iron sheets strewn around the road, wrapped around light poles and power lines

Councillor Leroy Gericke was on scene just minutes after the roof of the Weenen taxi rank dislodged and tells his story to the Estcourt News.”On Thursday evening at about 6pm I was called by Councillor Mthembeni Majola and informed that “the taxi rank in Weenen had collapsed.”

Upon arriving I witnessed a large number of corrugated iron sheets strewn around the road, wrapped around light poles and power lines and laying around the road approximately 40meters away from the structure. There was no evidence of any holes in the sheets to indicate that they have been securely fixed onto the structure, and ripped off by strong wind. Councillor Majola informed me that a storm had caused the damage. An informant in Weenen stated that there was a storm but not much of a storm.

My conclusion was that the sheets had been placed on the roof but not tied down. It is fortunate that the event occurred after most people had already left the taxi rank, as the flying sheets of corrugated iron, some 10 meters long would have injured people seriously.” An inquiry has been sent to the Municipal Manger, Nontlantla Njoko. This story will be updated soon regarding this matter.
