Matric exams cheating scandal spreads
A Tugela Ferry Seconday School has been fingered as one of the 'worst offenders'

Mpikayizekanye Secondary in Tugela Ferry has been named by the Sunday Times as one of the ‘worst offenders’ in the matric exams cheating scandal that has spread to seven provinces.
The Sunday Times alleged that Education oversight body, Umalusi, allegedly found evidence of possible assistance by an invigilator in the maths paper.
So far 58 of 117 centres audited in KZN and the Eastern Cape were found guilty of cheating along with six centres in Gauteng, one in the Northern Cape, one in North West, two in Mpumalanga and one in the Western Cape.
Another example of cheating was that of 40 candidates at another school all having the same answers “word for word”.
The department is meanwhile furious at Umalusi’s announcement to block the release of all results for exam centres implicated in the scandal. The department felt that only the release of results for affected subjects should be blocked.
The education department on Friday said however that all was on track for the release of matric results early this month, reported News24.
On MondayMinister Angie Motshekga is expected to announce the outcome of the examinations in a live broadcast flighted both on TV and on the department’s website.
On Tuesday, results will be published in newspapers, classified according to examination numbers and not names. Watch the Courier for full details of local schools’ results.
