The Festive Season is generally a time where road safety and awareness is at the forefront of the minds of motorists and emergency services alike.

Although KZN Private Ambulance Service in Vryheid’s dedicated team of emergency medical technicians had their hands full over the Christmas and New Year period, strangely enough, of the many incidents they responded to, there were only two reported cases of motor vehicle accidents in Vryheid over this time period.

On New Year's Eve, shortly before 9:00pm, KZN Private Ambulance Service's team of emergency medical technicians responded to an incident in East Street where the driver of a Landrover lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a slow moving vehicle trying to perform a U turn. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries sustained in the incident.

Dhlomodhlomo Valley, near the top of the Mkuzi river, where a game ranger was allegedly ambushed by a leopard on the morning of December 30. In the attack, which lasted only ten seconds, according to emergency medical technicians who responded to the incident, the victim sustained puncture wounds and a fracture of his left humerus. Had another game ranger in the area not scared off the leopard, the outcome could possibly have been much more disastrous.

All patients were stabilised at the scene and then transported to Vryheid Provincial Hospital for further treatment.
