Soccer legend conducts clinic in Ulundi

I have unearthed another skillful player nicknamed Deco and I think in the next few years he will be a better player than the late “Ace” Ntsoelengoe and Jomo Somo. He said he has sent abroad more than 40 players who made their grade overseas”.

MORE than 500 children, between the ages of 13 and 17 years old, attended a Jomo Sono coaching clinic in Ulundi on Saturday.

The youngsters from the five local municipalities under the Zululand District Municipality all displayed their soccer talents to impress soccer legend, Sono, who enjoyed every moment of this big event organised by the Zululand District Municipality.

Many of the young players who were selected will feature in the Soccer Academy which will be launched here in Ulundi while the fortunate ones will go to the Jomo Cosmos School of Soccer in Johannesburg.

Present at this event were the Honourable Mayor of Zululand District Municipality, Cllr MA Hlatshwayo; the Ulundi Mayor, Cllr Juana Manana; ZDM Speaker, Mr VO Mbuyisa; councillors from various municipalities, as well as members of the community. A large contingent of journalists were also in attendance.

Speaking before the beginning of the clinic, Cllr Hlatshwayo said this was a very important occasion in the ZDM calendar, to have one of South African soccer legends conducting a clinic in our District. He said Sono was a well-known name in our country and he has produced a number of quality players. His presence in our district will help produce future quality players.

In his speech before the start of the programme, Sono warned that those who will not be selected should never be discouraged, but should try again next year.

The event culminated in a friendly match between a youthful Jomo Cosmos side against the Zululand District team. Cosmos won via a goal from Ralph “Ahoy”Matene five minutes from time. In another match KwaGqikazi College team beat a Zululand Junior team 1-0.
