Local ladies make a splash to save the Rhino

While Louanda will be taking part for the second time, Astrid, a grade 12 pupil at Vryheid High School, will be taking part in her first ever 8 Mile this year.

Louanda De Beer and Astrid Kholmeyer will be taking part in the Midmar Mile as part of the 8 Mile Club this year.

While Louanda will be taking part for the second time, Astrid, a grade 12 pupil at Vryheid High School, will be taking part in her first ever 8 Mile this year.

The 8 Mile Charity Club was started in 2001 by Stan Kozlowski to raise funds for the Wildlands Conservation Trust. The club is currently headed by Mervyn Bremner, Richard Stretch and Stan Kozlowski.

The club requires the swimmers to complete all eight races on the Midmar Mile programme, and in the process raise funds for the various charitable organisations that are identified by the club each year.

Both ladies will be raising funds for the Save the Rhino charity and are required to raise R10 000-00 each for this worthy cause. With this goal in mind, they will be holding a fundraising event on January 24 at Oasis/Pick ‘n’ Pay. They will be selling boerewors rolls, as well as ‘slush puppies’ and cupcakes.

The Midmar Mile 8 Mile Swim will take place on February 7 and 8, where both ladies will swim all eight events, eight miles in total.

Louanda and Astrid would like to thank their sponsors thus far and request the support and assistance of the Vryheid community, who are well known for coming together for a good cause. What better cause than Save the Rhino? What better goal than the survival of a species which has come under attack on a massive scale in recent years?

Anyone who can assist these brave young ladies in this rather enormous endeavour can contact Louanda De Beer on 082 554 0477 or Astrid Kholmeyer on 082 303 4578.
